Carvings: OMG the Fries [FoBo Feed]

Carvings, located street level in the Potomac House GW dorm at 2021 F St, serves up standard grilled café food: burgers, cheese steaks, paninis, grilled sandwiches, and more.  Here’s the rundown:Entryway Menu

The Price: Under $10

The Good: The food’s super tasty for the most part, and is served up quick and fresh.  The prices are reasonable, but you can definitely tell you’re paying GW prices.

The not-so-good: While the prices are reasonable, they’re more reasonable for some items than others.  Also, this is located in a GW dorm, so while it’s pretty speedy during the summer months, expect crowds of GW students during the school year.

The Great: The fries. Seriously guys, the fries.  The fries, seriously guys.  Don’t go into this place and leave without getting an order of fries.

The Noms: 3 out of 5 Noms. Nom Nom Nom.

Keep reading to find out the deets, see some pics, and find out why I gave this place only 3 Noms.

First, more on the fries.  These might be some of the best fries on Foggy Bottom.  If I were to judge Carvings on their fries alone, they’d get 5 full Noms.  Crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked–you’ll find yourself going back to this place for more.  The fries are the main dish here, everything else is just a side.

When it comes to sandwiches and burgers, they’re not bad either.  The St. Asaph’s, a turkey and artichoke sandwich that’s grilled to perfection and tastes great, but isn’t the best they can do with turkey.

The best is their Classic Turkey sandwich.  The bread is thick and chewy, with a crisp toasted crust, while the turkey, creamy cheese, and sweet cranberry spread burst in your mouth and conjure up memories of the-day-after-Thanksgiving lunches.

If you’re looking for something meatless (and you’re not interested in two orders of fries), you can try the veggie burger.   It’s not great, but it’s not bad.  Which in the world of veggie burgers makes it good.

For a sweet treat, they sell Pocky under the counter.  If you don’t already know about this delicious japanese treat, go there and buy it. Right now.

  1. I think this is owned by the same people who own the grill in the basement of Ivory. So if this is busy, get your fry fix there.

    1. I think you’re right about that. They also own the Uptowner Cafe in the law school.

      1. Is that place any good? I always forgot it existed.

      2. i haven’t had great experiences with the Uptowner — I’m sure i’ll give it another chance when it comes time to review. For now though, i’m feeling like sushi.
