It’s prime season for Honey Crisp Apples right now, and more than one stand sells them at the FoBo Farmers’ Market. I was shocked to find out that this apple is the state fruit of Minnesota (I can think of a few better candidates.) But since it was frankensteined at the U of M I suppose it makes sense.
As for how it tastes: it’s freaking amazing. I’m a long-time Granny Smith fan, but this apple really takes the cake. The apple cake. This fruit has the perfect balance of sweetness, crispiness, and tartness. I love the tangy tartness of a Granny apple, but the Honey Crisp, with it’s super dense and juicy-crisp texture blows the Grannys right out of the bobbing barrel. I’m not the only person who has become obsessed with the oral pleasures of this apple. It’s so good, it’s inspired a dot-com AND a dot-org site.
What is it good for? Cakes, pies, and tarts would work well. But really, these apples are so amazing raw that you’ll find yourself eating more pieces than you put into the pie as you slice up your apple. Just wash it off, put it in your mouth, and enjoy. No need to fancy it up beyond that.
These apples can be found at several of the stands at the Market, so head over today and try one!
