Weekday Roundup

Hello dear readers! I hope you enjoy our new layout, had a restful & rainy weekend, and are ready for a fun filled (or midterm-y) week that is hopefully less drizzly than the last!

Monday

  • Sol Cafe was aiming for a reopening today, so if they accomplished their goal, stop by and grab a cup of coffee.
  • If you’re looking for a trivia night, try Tonic — it starts at 8:30 pm.

Tuesday

  • If you like magic tricks (I mean, illusions), then head to the Millennium Stage at 6 pm for a free show. Magic Olmach, who recently won the title of “Champion of Europe Close-up” in 2008 and “World Champion of Magic” in 2009, will be performing as party of the week-long Kids Euro Festival.
  • GWU: Free yoga on the Mount Vernon campus in the Hand Chapel, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. A good way to unwind after midterms.

Wednesday

  • Generation O at the National Opera continues with its ticket discounts for people 18 to 35. Enter the code “9160″ when purchasing tickets to Wednesday night’s 7:30 pm performance of Falstaff at the Kennedy Center.
  • GWU: Former Senators Graham & Talent will present the WMD Commission Interim Report on the 7th floor of the Elliot School. Register online. More information can be found here.
  • If you need lunch break plans, consider this 12 pm talk at the Renwick Gallery: “The Problem of Frames.” Led by American Art Museum frames conservator Martin Kotler, this talk/tour will bring new appreciation to a something you might never have noticed.
  • Georgetown’s City Tavern (3206 M Street, NW) is the place to be if you’re fashionable, into complimentary hors d’oeuvres and champagne, or want to learn about up and coming female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. The “Beauty at it’s Best” event highlights skincare, shoes, and jewelry. Samples, booths, and prizes are to be expected, and there is $10 suggested donation to Suited for Change. The event starts at 6 pm.

Thursday

  • DC Young Republicans are having their monthly happy hour meet up in Bar Dupont (1500 New Hampshire Avenue NW) starting at 6:00 pm. I assume you keep your eyes peeled for the group sporting the highest percentage of power ties.
  • Anyone who loves chocolate knows the name Ghirardelli, but few probably know Domingo Ghiardelli. Come to the Portrait Gallery at 6 pm for a half hour talk about the man behind the sweets.

All Week

  • This is the start of an international campaign to end fat talk: Monday begins Fat Talk Free Week! What is “fat talk?” The constant and casual way women (and even men) are socialized to talk about their bodies in negative ways. So if you’ve been trying to bring positivity into your life, this is a good week to start. Learn more at the link.

Upcoming Event

  • Wednesday, November 11th, marks the day of 2009’s Capital Food Fight, an event that showcases a battle between 5 DC chefs to fight hunger. Anthony Bourdain is gonna be there, y’all, as a co-host. Tickets are $175, and proceeds go to DC Central Kitchen. That ticket price will get you in to see the chef battle (6:30 pm), but will also give you access to the tasting tables of 60 DC restaurants — the biggest, best buffet ever. Tickets sell fast so I thought I’d throw this up here as soon as I could.
