What do you guys think about it?  It’s kind of nice to have bike racks that aren’t so plain Jane, yeah?

Thanks again to Catherine for the pic!

Mysterious Lady Head Appears in Foggy Bottom

Mysterious Lady at 21st and H

Update: Mystery solved!

I cross 21st and H every day and just locked eyes with a mysterious woman…. er… well, a woman’s head sculpted into one of the street fixtures, at least.

For the record, I also have no idea what these blue fixtures are in the first place. I’ve seen them all over the city, and in Chinatown there they’re filled with maps of the area.  I believe they’re leftover fixtures from some bygone era (I’ve heard they were for phones at one time, but don’t know if that’s true.)  Looks like someone in FoBo decided to take a more artistic approach, and this one is filled with a concrete bust of a woman’s head. BTW, the opposite side has the same thing.

Do you have any idea what this is?  Where is she looking? Have you spotted any others around Foggy Bottom?

“Democratic Camera” at the Corcoran [Artsy Fartsy Fridays]

Eggleston 1977Showing now at the Corcoran, William Eggleston: Democratic Camera, Photographs and Video, 19612008 is a show you won’t want to miss.  Eggleston’s career arguably defined color photography in the art world.  From an excellent New Yorker article on his work and significance:

You can always tell a William Eggleston photograph. It’s the one in color that hits you in the face and leaves you confused and happy, and perhaps convinces you that you don’t understand photography nearly as well as you thought you did.

He shoots like a shutterbug and executes like a painter.

The show is a retrospective — the equivalent of a “greatest hits” album, so this show should appeal equally well to both newbs and l33ts alike.   Eggleston titled the show Democratic Camera to reflect his “democratic” way of looking at things through the lense: all things equally interesting and significant.  Unlike other artists who focus their work on capturing the bizarre, magnificent, or surreal, Eggleston aims to make the ordinary extraordinary.

The show is running from now until September 20th at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (map).  Make sure to check out the Corc’s hours here before you plan a trip though, and note that it costs $10 for adults, $8 for students/senior/military.
